Making Curriculum Pop! Math, Pop Culture, and Better Practices
During the webinar, Ryan Goble and Kelly Clark will introduce their networks of educators interested in teaching through pop culture. We will discuss questions about "popmatics" (pop mathematics) and technology-induced shifts in educational practices.

Ryan R. Goble
began his teaching career as a high school English teacher in Ann Arbor, MI; he has since taught, consulted and presented for a wide variety of students, schools and organizations all over the United States. Ryan holds a Master's Degree in Education and a Bachelor's Degree in English from the University of Michigan. Additionally, he has a Screenwriting certificate from UCLA.
In 2005 Ryan began his doctorate (part-time) at Teachers College Columbia University. During his four years in New York City he mentored teachers
in all disciplines,
coordinated curriculum and collaborated with the entire staff to develop professional learning communities at Banana Kelly High School in the South Bronx.
Ryan's favorite quote from a former high school student? "Despite the fact that we learned things, we had fun in Mr. Goble's class." Ryan always brings hands-on differentiated techniques to his workshops that allow teachers to have fun while they learn how to make their curriculum pop.
In the fall of 2009, Ryan's work was published in the

. His consulting specialties include systemic school improvement, best practices, curriculum design, literacy, assessment and technology & popular culture across the curriculum.
Ryan has an extensive background in the entertainment industry. He worked in marketing for Virgin Records, was a DJ at NPR in Detroit and worked at E! Entertainment Television in Los Angeles. Ryan’s high school students have worked with people like actors Robin Williams, Julianne Moore, screenwriter William Goldman (
The Princess Bride
All The President’s Men
) and director Spike Jonze. Ryan is the founder of

Since 2003 Mr. Goble has taught summer TIDE courses for the DuPage Regional Office of Education. In 2009 Mr. Goble and his wife moved home to Chicago where he presently adjuncts for Aurora, DeVry and Roosevelt Universities. In 2009 Mr. Goble will complete a six year term on the National Council of Teachers of English's (NCTE) Media Commission and plans to complete his dissertation on "cultural connectivism" by 2011.
is a professional educator with experience teaching high school mathematics, web-based mathematics courses, and writing and editing mathematics courses. She graduated from Louisiana State University with a B.S. in Secondary Education (and a minor in Mathematics) and went on to earn her M.S.in Curriculum, Assessment and Instruction from Walden University.
Kelly has numerous accomplishments including several awards and experience leading professional seminars and workshops. Her personal experience in school has compelled her to take a stand and empower youth through mathematics. Over the years, she has realized that in order to make a true impact, teachers much adapt their teaching to reach students, rather than expect students change their learning styles to reach the teacher. She has taught in all types of conditions and environments, including having seen the first-hand the affects of Hurricane Katrina and Rita in Louisiana (during her first year of teaching), and even experienced forest fires and a tornado in Georgia (during her second and fourth years of teaching).
Kelly has a passion for creating innovative and interactive learning activities, especially through the use of pop culture elements such as videos from YouTube, clips from TV shows and movies, math rap songs, and her collection of celebrity endorsements. The mission of PopMatics, which is what she calls the intersection of popular culture and mathematics, is to “Create a Generation of Mathematicians."
Kelly grew up in Texas and Louisiana and enjoys spending time with family and friends, playing with her two dogs, crafting, and anything LSU! She is currently the Senior Curriculum Developer at The Research Masters, a book packaging company and can be found on her website
